How can collecting comics in digital form become a more delightful experience?

status quo
the application offers users a remarkable catalogue and one of the best readers among all competing products.
In addition to the sometimes unclear navigation and lack of in-app purchases, we recognised opportunities for improvement in terms of the visual design, which presents the exciting content unfavourably.
transformation of the analogue
it opened up an exciting field for us to work on a medium in a digital context that has its origins in the analogue world.
we explored what constitutes the analogue experience, how analogue features can be translated into digital or how completely new experiences can be developed.
user need statement
tai, a 28-year-old journalism student, loves comic book stories featuring his favourite characters and wants a quality digital collector's experience to admire his treasures with pride.
process
1/4 analysing the application
using methods such as screen flow, classification into design categories, competitor comparison, review analysis and user testing, we analysed the status quo application and identified potentials.
2/4 use case
from the insights gained, we formed use cases, user needs & profiles, design principles and how might wes. a specific use case was defined for which an innovative solution had to be found.
3/4 concept development
through a design studio workshop, we developed concept ideas, mood boards and developed wireframe variants.
4/4 screendesign & prototype
in addition to user testing, we gradually developed the information hierarchy, navigation structure, screen flow and screen designs. we put these together in a prototype and supplemented it with edited 3D models and micro-animations.
the "comiXology" redesign is a tablet application that focusses on improved structuring and navigation and particularly emphasises the emotional aspect of the content with a focus on the collecting experience.
collectibles in digital space
In order to be able to admire these collectibles and all purchased comics appropriately, a newly conceived collection and library was created.
They particularly emphasises the often elaborately designed covers of the comics.
appreciation of the artworks
we decided to enhance special comic editions with collectibles, which can be high-quality 3d models or illustrations of characters or objects.
